1. PM Modi flags off Run for Unity on Sardar Patel's birth anniversary


i. Prime Minister Narendra Modi today dedicated birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel as National Unity Day.
ii. Flagging off run for unity on the 139th birth anniversary of the first Home Minister of the country celebrated as "Rashtriya Ekta Divas", Modi said Patel devoted his life for the unity of the Nation .

iii. It was unfortunate that "our very own people" were killed on his birth anniversary 30 years ago. Mr.Modi said with reference to anti-Sikh riots that followed then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's assassination this day 30 years ago.
iv. Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel on 31 October 2014 laid foundation stone of the Statue of Unity - the world's tallest statue of Iron man of India Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.



2. Fadnavis takes over as first BJP Chief Minister of Maharashtra


i. Devendra Fadnavis took oath as the first BJP Chief Minister of Maharashtra on Friday.
ii. Seven Cabinet Ministers and two Ministers of State were sworn in along with Mr. Fadnavis at a ceremony held at Mumbai’s Wankhede stadium.
iii. Eknath Khadse, Sudhir Munguntiwar, Vinod Tawde, Chandrakant Patil, Vishnu Sawra, Prakash Mehta and Pankaja Munde were the Cabinet Ministers. Dilip Kamble and Vidya Thakur took over as Ministers of State.

3. 350 national highways to have electronic toll plazas by December

i. As many as 350 toll plazas on national highways across the country will adopt the electronic tax collection method from December 31, resulting in savings worth Rs 34,000 crore.
ii. A pilot project for interoperable ETC system of 10 toll plazas between Mumbai (Charoti) and Ahmedabad has already been tested and seamless ETC on this section is in operation.
iii. For implementing ETC across the country, a new company under Company's Act, 1956, with equity participation from NHAI (25 per cent), concessionaires (50 per cent) and financial institutions (25 per cent) has already been constituted.
iv. The name of the new company is "Indian Highways Management Company Limited".

4. Infants to get free treatment till age one in Rajasthan

i. Extending the scope of the Janani Shishu Suraksha Yojana (JSSY) with an aim to bring down the infant mortality rate (IMR) in the State, the Rajasthan government has decided to provide free treatment to newborns till they complete one year.
ii. The scheme is applicable to all children born in public health facilities. The decision comes amidst reports of suspected diphtheria deaths in Alwar district over the past few days.
iii. The JSSY, launched by the United Progressive Alliance government in 2011, provides free treatment for a mother and her newborn for up to one month in a public healthcare facility.

5. Sweden became the first European Union country to recognize the State of Palestine

i. Sweden became the first European Union (EU) country to officially recognise the State of Palestine.
ii. Israel protested against the Sweden decision and the Israeli Foreign Ministry summoned the Swedish ambassador shortly after the announcement.
iii. 130 other nations that already recognise the Palestinian State include Hungary, Slovakia and Poland although these three countries took this step before joining the EU.

6. Facebook sets up India Client Council

i. World’s largest social networking site Facebook has set up the India Client Council to offer a forum to brands to share ideas about the future of marketing.
ii. The Council includes companies like Tata Motors, Flipkart, Airtel, P&G, Madison World, ICICI Bank, HUL, Micromax and Future Group among others.
iii. India is the largest market for Facebook outside the US, with over 100 million users. Globally, it had 1.35 billion monthly active users as of September 30, 2014.

7. Warren Anderson, wanted in Bhopal gas tragedy, dies

i. Former Union Carbide chief Warren Anderson, wanted in India in connection with the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy has died aged 92.

ii. The Indian government made multiple requests to extradite him, and officially labelled him a fugitive. A judge also called him an “absconder”.
iii. The Bhopal horror began around midnight on December 2-3, 1984, when a chemical reaction in a plant that made insecticides caused a leak of toxic gases.

8. Pankaj Advani won IBSF World Billiards Championship

i. Pankaj Advani on 30 October 2014 won IBSF World Billiards Championship (Point Format) in Bangalore.


ii. He won by defeating Robert Hall of the UK with a score of 1928 – 893 in the finals.
iii. This is his 12th title in the Timed Format and third Grand double.

1. Malala won 2014 World’s Children prize


  I.  Malala Yousafzai won the 2014 World’s Children Prize on 29 October 2014 after a global vote involving millions of children.

2. SunEdison signed MoU with Rajasthan Government to set up 5000MW solar projects.

  I.  SunEdison Inc. on 28 October 2014 signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Rajasthan Government to establish 5000 MW capacity of solar power in Rajasthan in next five years.
II.  The MoU comes at an opportune time following the Rajasthan's Government new Solar Policy which aspires to create 25 GW of solar capacity in the state in the next few years.
III. SunEdison intends to establish 5 GW of capacity in the form of multiple mega solar photovoltaic (PV) projects, with the expected capacity of each mega solar project at 500 megawatts (MW).

3. WhatsApp founders own nearly $9b in Facebook stock.

  I.  WhatsApp founders Jan Koum and Brian Acton received 116 million shares of Facebook stock currently worth nearly $9 billion when they sold their unprofitable messaging service to the social networking leader earlier this month.
II.  The breakdown of the big winners in Facebook Inc.’s $22 billion acquisition emerged Wednesday in a regulatory filing.
III. Koum, a Ukraine immigrant who was once living on welfare, reaped the biggest jackpot with 76.4 million Facebook shares now worth $5.8 billion. That makes him Facebook’s fourth largest stockholder behind company CEO Mark Zuckerberg and two mutual funds, Fidelity Management and Vanguard.

4. Prez Mukherjee to award best performers among CPSEs on Nov 5

  I.  President Pranab Mukherjee will present the prestigious SCOPE Meritorious Awards to central public sector enterprises (CPSEs) on November 5.


II.  The Winners of Gold Trophy of the SCOPE Meritorious Awards in specialized fields (2012-13) are SAIL, BPCL, IOCL, HAL, BEL, PFC and NSKFDC," SCOPE said.
III.  CPSEs, which would be awarded, have been selected for performing well in various fields like corporate governance, corporate social responsibility, environment and sustainable development, human resource development, technology development & innovation, best managed bank, financial institution or insurance company and best managed PSE.

5. Austerity drive: No first class air travel for bureaucrats

  I. Unveiling an austerity drive to trim fiscal deficit, the government has banned first class air travel for bureaucrats, meetings in five-star hotels and purchase of cars while freezing new appointments.
II. The measures that are aimed at cutting non-plan spending by 10 per cent includes a ban on filling of vacant posts to reduce fiscal deficit to a 7-year low of 4.1 per cent of GDP.

III.The previous UPA government had also clamped similar measures in 2012 and 2013 to cut down on fiscal deficit. Creation of new positions as well as car purchases are mostly banned and video conferencing should be used wherever possible.
IV. The deficit which had touched a high of 5.7 per cent in 2011-12, was brought down to 4.8 per cent in 2012-13 and further to 4.5 per cent in 2013-14 by way of austerity measures. 


6.  Black money: I-T probe to be completed by March 2015

I. Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi on Wednesday submitted to the court in a sealed envelope, a list of 627 names of persons with foreign accounts along with a status report regarding the investigation conducted against them.
II. Mr. Rohatgi said India also has to sign the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act with the U.S. government by December 31, 2014. The law would enable the U.S. government to supply data on Indians in the U.S. and vice versa.
III. “If India fails to keep the confidentiality clause, the U.S. will back out of such a treaty. Without the treaty, the U.S. will slap a 30 per cent withholding tax on all remittances from the U.S, including exports,” he said.
IV. Mr. Rohatgi said more than half the people in the list of 627 were Indian nationals while the rest were NRIs. He said most of them had accounts with the HSBC Bank, Geneva.

1.    Surya Prakash appointed as Chairman of Prasar Bharti Board
i. Surya Prakash appointed as the Chairman of Prasar Bharti Board for a term of three years. 
ii. He succeeded Mrinal Pande whose term ended on April 2014.
iii. He was appointed on the recommendation of a three-member committee headed by Vice President M Hamid Ansari and comprising of Press Council of India Chairman Markandey Katju and Information and Broadcasting Secretary Bimal Julka.
iv. At present, he is a Distinguished Fellow at the Vivekananda International Foundation in New Delhi and Director of India Foundation in New Delhi.

2.    All foreign bank accounts will be assessed by March 2015: AG
i. With the Centre submitting a list of 627 account holders in foreign banks to Supreme Court in the blackmoney case, Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi on Wednesday said that the deadline for investigation under the Income Tax Act into these accounts is 31st March 2015.
ii. He said that the court directed that the sealed envelope with the names be given to the Special Investigation Team (SIT) and also allowed the Centre to put its "problems regarding treaties with foreign nations" before the SIT. 
iii. "After that we shall request them to submit the report in the court by November 30," the AG said on Wednesday. 
iv. "There are about 627-628 accounts along with a status report which we have submitted in the Supreme Court today in a sealed cover. Last date for investigation and assessment into all these accounts is March 31, 2015. 

3.    India ranks 142 in latest "Ease of Doing Business" report: WB
i. India ranked 142 among the 189 countries surveyed for the latest World Bank's "Ease of Doing Business" report released on Wednesday, a drop by two places from the last year's ranking, as Singapore topped the list.
ii. The fall in India's ranking from the last year's 140 is mainly because other nations performed much better, Bank officials said. In the 2014 report, India had 52.78 points and this year it scored 53.97 points. 
iii. The latest ranking, however, does not take into account a slew of measures taken by the Modi Government to make India a business friendly destination. 
iv. Singapore with 88.27 points occupies the top position in the ease of doing business followed by New Zealand, Hong Kong, Denmark and South Korea respectively. 
v. Among other major countries, the US has been ranked seventh, Britain (eight), China (90), Sri Lanka (99), Nepal (108), Maldives (116), Bhutan (125), and Pakistan (128). 

4.    India has 2nd largest proportion of highly paid expats: Survey
i. India is home to the second largest proportion of high-earning expatriates in the world after China and ahead of countries such as Switzerland, Russia and Hong Kong - according to the seventh Expat Explorer survey by HSBC Expat.
ii. The Expat Explorer survey, conducted by YouGov, shared views of nearly 9,300 expats from around the world on the quality of life, financial well being and the ease of raising a family abroad.
iii. The survey also revealed that expats in India also report greater savings on everyday expenses and have substantial disposable income when compared to their home countries. Expats in India spend less on utilities (43%), groceries (42%), clothing (42%), healthcare (41%), housing (40%) and household goods (40%).

5.    ING Vysya Bank CEO Shailendra Bhandari resigned
i. Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of ING Vysya Bank Shailendra Bhandari on 28 October 2014 resigned from his post after taking charge of the Bangalore-based private lender. 

ii. He will continue to be in the office till 31 January 2015. However, Bhandari's term was schedule to end in August 2015. He took charge of ING Vysya Bank in August 2009. 
iii. The appointment of Uday Sareen as MD & CEO of ING Vysya Bank is now subjected to approval of Reserve Bank of India.


6.    India offers USD 300mn credit line to Vietnam for trade
i. Targeting an annual bilateral commerce of USD 15 billion by 2020, India on Tuesday offered a USD 300 million credit line to Vietnam for trade diversification.
ii. India has already extended a USD 100 million Line of Credit (LoC) last month to the South East Asian nation for defence procurement to help it modernise its armed forces. 
iii. During a meeting of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Vietnamese counterpart Nguyen Tan Dung where they noted that enhancing economic cooperation should be pursued as a strategic objective, a USD 300 million LoC was offered by India to strengthen commercial ties, official sources said. 
iv. The Vienamese Prime Minister welcomed Indian companies to invest in Vietnam and affirmed his country's commitment to create favourable conditions for Indian investments. 

7.    Amitabh Bachchan summoned by US court for instigating violence during 1984 riots
i. Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan was recently in news as he was summoned by a US Federal Court in Los Angeles on 28 October 2014 for allegedly instigating violence against the Sikh community during the November 1984 riots.
ii. Amitabh Bachchan  was accused of raising the slogan Khooon Ka Badla Khoon (blood for blood) on 31 October  1984 after then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was shot dead by her two Sikh bodyguards.
iii. The complaint against Amitabh Bachchan was filed by New York-based Sikh for Justice (SFJ) and two alleged victims Babu Singh Dukhiya and Mohender Singh of the anti-Sikh riots.

The November 1984 anti-Sikhs riots were a series of persecutions directed against Sikhs in India by anti-Sikh mobs in response to the assassination of Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards.

8.    Zambian President Michael Sata dies in London
i. Zambian President Michael Sata has died in London, where he had been receiving treatment for an undisclosed illness, three private Zambian media outlets said. Reuters news agency also reported that a government source had confirmed the death. 
ii. Sata's health has been a subject of debate since June this year when he disappeared from the public for almost three months with speculation that he had gone to Israel for specialized treatment while the government said he had gone on a working holiday. 

9.    Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Chief sentenced to death for war crimes
i. In Bangladesh, the International Crimes Tribunal today sentenced the Jamaat -e-Islami Chief Motiur Rahman Nizami to death penalty for crimes against humanity during 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War. 
ii. Nizami was the leader of the Students' Wing of the Jamaat -e-Islami during the Liberation War, and headed the infamous Al-Badr militia.
iii. He was arrested in June, 2010, on charges of war crimes, and had been lodged in the Kashimpur jail during the investigations. The verdict has come almost 4 months after it was postponed in June, 2014 after Nizami fell ill on the verdict day.

10.  South Africa tops ICC ODI rankings; India slips to 3rd position
i. South Africa has moved to the top of latest ICC ODI rankings with 115 rating points thanks to its clean sweep against New Zealand.
ii. This is the first time in five years that South Africa has surged to the top of the ODI team table. It was the number-one team in ODI format for the last time in September 2009.
iii. Australia has climbed to second position with 114 points while India has slipped to third position with 113 points in the ranking. Among the batsmen Virat Kohli goes down to number three after AB Deviiliers and Hashim Amla. India’s skipper Dhoni is at number six while Shikhar Dhawan slips to number nine.

1.    Devendra Fadnavis to be new Maharashtra CM


i. Maharashtra BJP President Devendra Fadnavis will be the state’s new Chief Minister. The decision was unanimously taken by all the 121 newly elected legislators of the BJP.

ii. The Chief Minister Designate, Mr. Devendra Fadnavis along with his core team will now call upon Governor C Vidyasagar Rao and stake claim to form government.

iii. Devendra Fadnavis will be sworn-in at Mumbai’s sprawling Wankhede Stadium on Friday with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in audience. 

2.    Disclose names of foreign bank account holders: SC
i. In an order with far-reaching consequences, the Supreme Court on Tuesday directed the central government to furnish it the names of all Indian foreign account holders given to it by the German, French and Swiss authorities.
ii. The apex court bench headed by Chief Justice H.L. Dattu told Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi that the government need not do anything and just disclose the names to the court and it will decide whether the matter should be investigated by the income tax authorities or by the CBI. 
iii. As Rohatgi sought to impress upon the court that the veracity of the accounts disclosed to it is being investigated by the income tax authorities, Chief Justice Dattu said: "Why do you want to have trouble of investigating. 
iv. The court asked the attorney general to furnish the names in a sealed cover by Wednesday. 

3.    10th World Islamic Economic Forum gets underway in Dubai
i. The 10th edition of World Islamic Economic Forum, WIEF gets underway in Dubai today. 
ii. More than 2,000 participants from 100 countries of the world are taking part in the three day event. The theme of the forum is “Innovative Partnerships for Economic Growth”. 
iii. The forum at the Madinat Jumeirah Conference Center is expected to give a new impetus to Islamic economy, share the experiences and to focus on making Dubai the Islamic economic hub in the region. 
iv. The organizers said that the event will share the best practices and evidences for Islamic economy which is worth $ 6.7 trillion today.

4.    India, Vietnam decide to step up security, defence ties 
i. India and Vietnam on Tuesday decided to ramp up their defence and security ties that will see supply of four naval patrol vessels to Hanoi and increased training of its military personnel, a month after India extended USD 100 million Line of Credit (LoC) for defence procurement. 
ii. The decision between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Vietnamese counterpart Nguyen Tan Dung, who held wide-ranging talks here, to boost defence and security ties is likely to irk China. "Our defence cooperation with Vietnam is among our most important ones. India remains committed to the modernisation of Vietnam's defence and security forces," Modi said following his talks with Tan.
iii. This will include expansion of training programme, which is already very substantial, joint exercises and cooperation in defence equipment.

5.    Govt appoints committee to assess compensation for coal blocks
i. Days after promulgating an ordinance to e-auction Supreme Court-cancelled coal blocks, the govt has formed a committee headed by former CVC Pratyush Sinha to assess compensation to be paid for taking over running or ready to produce mines.
ii. The panel, which will also compromise officials of ministries of coal, power, finance and law, will submit its recommendations by 10th November, sources with direct knowledge of the development said. 
iii. The Supreme Court had on 24th September cancelled allocation of 204 coal blocks to various companies between 1993 and 2009. 
iv. Out of these, 37 are running coal mines and another five are ready to produce by April. Unlike others, their cancellation is to take effect from April 2015. 

6.    Nepal gearing up for SAARC summit next month
i. Various SAARC member states are sending their advanced teams to Kathmandu to assess the preparations for the regional event scheduled from the 22nd to the 27th of next month. 
ii. With just less than a month remaining for the summit to begin, government officials, especially those at Ministry of Foreign Affairs, are working on war-footing to complete the preparations for the summit. 
iii. Although substantive preparations for the Summit are almost over, logistic arrangements, including procurement of bullet-proof and other high-end cars for the visiting dignitaries, are still underway.

7.    India slips 13 spots to 114 in WEF gender gap index
i. India has performed poorly in removing gender-based disparities, ranking 114 out of 142 countries in World Economic Forum's 2014 gender gap index. It slipped 13 spots from its last year's ranking of 101.
ii. The country scored below average on parameters like economic participation, educational attainment and health and survival. India is part of the 20 worst-performing countries on the labour force participation, estimated earned income, literacy rate and sex ratio at birth indicators.

8.    India ranked 15 on political empowerment sub index
i. India is among the top 20 best-performing countries on the political empowerment sub index.
ii. Iceland has taken the top spot on the index consecutively since 2009. The US is ranked 20 while at 141, Pakistan was the second lowest ranking country,scoring poorly on all the four parameters.
iii. The index was first introduced by the World Economic Forum in 2006 as a framework for capturing the magnitude of gender-based disparities and tracking their progress.

9.    Japanese telecom giant SoftBank to invest $627 million in Snapdeal
i. Japanese telecom giant SoftBank will invest USD 627 million (about Rs 3,762 crore) in the online marketplace company Snapdeal.
ii. This is the largest investment made by a single investor in an e-commerce company in India which is the world's second most populous market.
iii. The investments come a day after SoftBank announced its plans to invest a whopping 10 billion US dollars in India in coming years, making the country its top most priority.
iv. Mr Masayoshi Son, had also met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi and believed to discuss various investment plans in India.

10.  Emaar MGF Land Limited tied up with PayU India for its online payment service
i. Realty firm Emaar MGF Land Limited on 27 October 2014 tied up with payment gateway firm PayU India for providing an online payment facility to its customers.
ii. Emaar MGF customers can now pay EMIs for their properties through PayUMoney
iii.  PayUMoney will help customers to pay anytime and any amount with no restrictions of NEFT or RTGS.
iv. The association will enable Emaar MGF to offer a unique and secured payment gateway on its customer service portal e-Services.

11.  Bank of India to open branch in Vietnam
i. Bank of India gets licence to set up bank in Vietnam. The licence was handed over after delegation level talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and visiting Vietnam Prime Minister.

12.  Ongoing selection process for public sector bank CMDs, EDs scrapped
i. Public sector banks such as Bank of Baroda, Canara Bank and Oriental Bank of Commerce may have to wait longer to get a Chairman, as the selection process will have to stat afresh. Based on suggestions given by a committee, the Government has cancelled the current selection process.
ii. A statement issued by the Finance Ministry on Monday said the Government had cancelled the current selection process for appointment of Chairmen and Managing Directors (CMD) and Executive Directors in public sector banks.
iii. “Eight posts of CMDs and 14 posts of EDs would require to be filled-up ‘de novo’,” a statement issued by the Ministry said. Apart from these banks, the post of CMD is vacant in Indian Overseas Bank, Syndicate Bank and United Bank of India.
iv. The Government has decided that a fresh process for selection would have to be implemented for filling up the existing vacancies.
v. The Reserve Bank of India Governor or his nominee in the rank of Deputy Governor will be part of the new selection process. “The Government would fill up all these vacancies expeditiously. The Government has also decided to finalise a new process for selection of CMDs/EDs for all future vacancies,” it said.

1.    Dilma Rousseff  re-elected as Brazilian President 

i. Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff has been re-elected in the tightest race the nation has seen since its return to democracy three decades ago, after a bitter campaign that divided Brazilians like no other before it.
ii. With 99 per cent of the vote counted, Rousseff had 51.5 per cent of the ballots, topping center-right challenger Aecio Neves with 48.5 per cent. 
iii. Rousseff's victory extends the rule of the Workers' Party, which has held the presidency since 2003. 
iv. During that time, they've enacted expansive social programs that have helped pull millions of Brazilians out of poverty and into the middle class. 
v. The choice between Rousseff and Neves split Brazilians into two camps those who thought only the president would continue to protect the poor and advance social inclusion versus those who were certain that only the contender's market-friendly economic policies could see Brazil return to solid growth.

2.    Black money case: Centre reveals names of three account holders 
i. The Centre has filed an affidavit before the Supreme Court in the black money case, naming three prominent businessmen including Pradip Burman, formerly of Dabur group. 
ii. Goa-based miner Radha S Timblo and Bullion trader Pankaj Chimanlal Lodhya were the other two businessmen named in the affidavit. 
iii The Centre told the court that it had no intention to withhold names of persons who have stashed black money abroad and stated that information received from foreign countries will be disclosed in all cases where tax evasion is established. 
iv. Every foreign account held by an Indian may not be illegal, the Centre said, adding that names cannot be disclosed unless there is prima facie evidence of wrongdoing. 

3.    World Bank estimates 5.6% growth for current fiscal
i. The World Bank has said that India is expected to grow at 5.6 per cent in current fiscal i.e. 2014-15. The growth is expected to accelerate further to 6.4 per cent in 2015-16 and 7 per cent in 2016-17.
ii. "India's long run growth potential remains high due to favourable demographics, relatively high savings and policies and efforts to improve skills and education, facilitate domestic market integration and incentivise manufacturing activities," the Bank said in a report titled 'India Development Update'.

4.    68th Infantry Day observed on 27 October
i. 68th Infantry Day was observed across India on 27 October 2014 to pay homage to war heroes. 
ii. The day was observed by performing the wreath-laying ceremony at the Parachute Regiment Training Centre War Memorial, JC Nagar in Bangalore, Karnataka.

5.    South African footballer Senzo Meyiwa died
i. South Africa's football captain and goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa died after being shot. The incident occurred at Meyiwa's girlfriend Kelly Khumalo’s house in Vosloorus, south of Johannesburg.
ii. The 27-year-old Meyiwa was killed after two armed men broke into the house where he was staying, while a third man remained outside. All three fled after the shots were fired.

6.    Jairam Ramesh designated as the head of Future Earth Engagement Committee
i. The former Union Minister Jairam Ramesh was designated as the head of Future Earth Engagement Committee, a global research platform panel on sustainable development.
ii.  The Future Earth Engagement Committee was instituted by an alliance of organisations including the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO).

11.  India drops to sixth place in ICC Test rankings
i. India on Sunday dropped to sixth place in the ICC Test rankings after Pakistan took a 1-0 lead in the ongoing series against Australia.
ii. “Pakistan’s victory in the Dubai Test has not only ensured that it will move ahead of India in fifth position irrespective of how the Abu Dhabi Test ends, it has dashed Australia hopes of regaining the number one Test ranking,” the ICC said in a statement.
iii. To move ahead of South Africa, Australia needed to win both the Tests. Now, their best series result can be a 1-1 draw, which will keep them in second position, three points behind South Africa.

ii. They were bundled out for 216. For Pakistan, Zulfiqar Babar took his maiden five wicket haul. Debutant Yasir Shah claimed four wickets. Younis Khan, who made 106 in the first innings and an unbeaten 103 in the second, was adjudged man of the match.
iii. Final scores:

1.    Manohar Lal Khattar takes over as new Haryana CM;

i.Senior BJP leader Manohar Lal Khattar has been sworn in as the new Chief Minister of Haryana today. 
ii. Khattar and his ministerial colleagues were administered the oath of office and secrecy by Governor Kaptan Singh Solanki at a ceremony at Panchkula which was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP president Amit Shah, party veterans L K Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi.

iii. Several Union Ministers including Rajnath Singh, Sushma Swaraj, Venkaiah Naidu, the Chief Ministers of BJP-ruled states, Punjab CM Parkash Singh Badal, LJP chief and Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan also attended the ceremony. 
iv. Those sworn-in as Cabinet Ministers were: Ram Bilas Sharma, Capt Abhimanyu, O P Dhankar, Anil Vij, Rao Narbir Singh and Kavita Jain. 
v. This is the first time that the state has got a BJP chief minister. He will be the fifth non-Jat Chief Minister of Haryana. 
vi. Khattar, 60, who won the Assembly polls from Karnal, in his maiden electoral appearance, administered the oath of office and secrecy by Governor Kaptan Singh Solanki at around 1120 hrs at the ceremony held at HUDA Ground in Panchkula near Chandigarh.

2.    India world’s 4th largest steel maker at 62.41 MT in Jan-Sept

i. With 62.41 million tonnes output, India remains the world’s fourth largest steel producer in the first nine months of the current year, preceded by China, Japan and the US.
ii. World Steel Association (WSA) data showed India’s steel production grew by 1.8 per cent, the second highest among the top four steel producing nations, during the January-September period from 61.27 MT in the same period last year.
iii. India has been the world’s fourth largest steel maker for the last four years. The order is likely to remain unchanged in current year too, an industry expert said.
iv. During the first nine months, China produced 618 MT steel which is a little more than half of world’s total production at 1,231 MT.
v. China logged 2.3 per cent growth during the period. But its steel production remained static in September, as per data revealed by WSA, at 67.5 MT when compared with the same month last year.
vi. Japan remained the remote second with 83.1 MT production during the nine-month period clocking just 0.8 per cent growth over 82.4 MT production in the same period last year.
vii. The US stood at the third spot with 66.33 MT production compared to 65.3 MT output during the January—September period of the last year.

3.    SBI launches mPassBook facility on its smartphone application
i. The nation's largest lender State Bank of IndiaBSE 0.26 % (SBI) launched a facility called 'mPassBook' today, on its 'State Bank Anywhere' mobile application, for its retail banking users.
ii. Launching the facility, SBI Chairman Arundhati Bhattacharya, said that 'mPassBook' is an electronic application of a physical passbook for savings bank and current accounts.
iii. The facility is currently available on Android phones but would soon be available on iOS and Blackberry phones too.

4.    PM  announces Rs.745 crore for Kashmir's damaged homes, hospitals
i. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday announced Rs.745 crore relief for rebuilding damaged homes and hospitals in flood-ravaged Jammu and Kashmir.
ii. Speaking to media persons at Raj Bhavan in Srinagar, Modi said the Union government would do everything possible to help rebuild the lives and livelihood of people who suffered in last month's floods in the state, an IANS report stated.
iii. Modi said the loss memo of Rs.44,000 crore submitted to the Centre by the state government was being considered, and announced an immediate relief of Rs.570 crore for rebuilding of damaged homes and Rs.175 crore for similarly affected hospitals in the state.

5.    China launches AIIB to rival World Bank
i. Australia, Indonesia and South Korea skipped the launch of a China-backed Asian infrastructure bank on Friday as the United States said it had concerns about the new rival to Western-dominated multilateral lenders.
ii. China's $ 50 billion Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) is seen as a challenge to the World Bank and Asian Development Bank, both multilateral lenders that count Washington and its allies as their biggest financial backers.
iii. China, which is keen to extend its influence in the region, has limited voting power over these existing banks despite being the world's second-largest economy.
iv. The AIIB, launched in Beijing at a ceremony attended by Chinese finance minister Lou Jiwei and delegates from 21 countries including India, Thailand and Malaysia, aims to give project loans to developing nations. China is set to be its largest shareholder with a stake of up to 50 percent.
v. Indonesia was not present and neither were South Korea and Australia, according to a pool report.
vi. Japan, China's main rival in Asia and which dominates the $ 164 billion Asian Development Bank along with the United States, was also not present, but it was not expected to be.

6.    EU doubles assistance to combat Ebola to 1 bn euros 
i. The European Union has nearly doubled its assistance to combat the raging Ebola virus in West Africa to 1 billion euros. 
ii. The heads of state and government of the 28-nation bloc agreed upon the move at their two-day summit concluded in Brussels on Friday. 
iii. "EU member nations pledged at the meting to increase their financial assistance to continue to provide emergency assistance for the population affected by the Ebola epidemic and to support a "sustained, coordinated and increased" effort to curb the spread of the deadly virus," a joint statement said. 
iv. Before providing 1 billion euros (USD 1.26 billion), EU leaders had pledged nearly 600 million euros to pay for medical staff and facilities in the worst affected countries - Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea, where some 4,900 people have died of the disease.

8.    Services sector FDI dips 9% to $1.08 bn in April-Aug
i. Foreign direct investment in the services sector dipped by 9 per cent to USD 1.08 billion during the April-August period of the ongoing fiscal.
ii. The services sector, which includes banking, insurance, outsourcing, R&D, courier and technology testing, had received FDI worth USD 1.19 billion during the first five months of the previous fiscal, 2013-14, according to the data by Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion.
iii. The services sector contributes over 60 per cent to India’s GDP. In 2013-14, foreign investment in the sector fell to USD 2.2 billion from USD 4.83 billion in 2012-13.
iv. Foreign investments are considered crucial for India, which needs around USD 1 trillion over five years (2012-17) to overhaul its infrastructure sector such as ports, airports and highways to boost growth.

11.  Stamp on Sri lankan Buddhist monk Dharmapala released 
i. A commemorative postage stamp on Sri Lankan Buddhist monk Anagarika Dharmapala, who is credited to have revived Buddhism in India in the 19th century, was released in New Delhi on Saturday by President Pranab Mukherjee.
ii. Law and Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, the High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to India Sudharshan Seneviratne, Member of Parliament Meenakshi Lekhi and Foreign Secretary Sujatha Singh were among those present on the occasion. 
iii. "Dharmapala, was one of the founding contributors of Sinhalese Buddhist nationalism and was also a pioneer in the revival of Buddhism in India," Mukherjee said. 
iv. In 1891, Dharmapala went on a pilgrimage to the Mahabodhi Temple at Bodh Gaya, where Lord Buddha had attained enlightenment. He decided to work towards restoring it's glory.

Ashwika’s film is a tale of a Kakapo parrot named Sirocco, which is perhaps the only bird in the world to have bagged a government job. Sirocco, a male bird was appointed as the official Spokesbird for Conservation in New Zealand who helped in conservation advocacy on social media.

14.  Sahil Doshi won 2014 Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge
i. Sahil Doshi, an Indian-American student on 22 October 2014 won the 2014 Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge.
ii. He was awarded for his innovative design of an eco-friendly battery that could help lower harmful greenhouse gases.
iii. His prototype named PolluCell is capable of converting Carbon Dioxide into electricity, ingeniously helping to reduce our carbon footprint while offering power for household uses and developing nations.
iv. The 2014 Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge prize also included 25000 US dollar and a student adventure trip to a destination such as Costa Rica.

15.  Sania-Cara pair clinches WTA Finals doubles title

i. Indian ace Sania Mirza and her Zimbabwean partner Cara Black ended the season and their partnership on a remarkable high by clinching the WTA finals women's doubles title with a comprehensive triumph in the summit clash in Singapore on Sunday.
ii. Sania and Cara, making their debut at the season finale, prevailed 6-1 6-0 over Su-Wei Hseih of Chinese Taipei and Shuai Peng of China in a clash that lasted just about an hour. 
iii. The Indo-Zimbabwean combination, which would be breaking up after this, broke the East Asians thrice in the opening set itself and were decisively better with their first serve. 

16.  Dhoni buys Ranchi franchise of Hockey India League

i. India cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Sahara Adventure Sports Limited are co—owners of new Ranchi—franchise of Hockey Indian League (HIL), Ranchi Rays, which was unveiled on Saturday.
ii. Ranchi Rhinos, who were the inaugural champions of HIL, was scrapped following distrust between owners (Patel—PS Group and Uniexcel Group) and Hockey India (HI).
