International Affairs


  1. World Animal Day (4th October 2014) celebrated across the globe. 
  2. India's intellectual property regime is fully compliant with WTO norms, the government said today, two days after the two countries decided to set up a high-level working group on IPR during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's US visit to sort out the contentious issue.
  3. Islamic State militants (also known as ISIL) claimed the beheading of a British aid worker Alan Henning, and suggested an American hostage may be killed next, in what they said was retaliation for the U.S.-led campaign against the group.
  4. This is the fourth beheading of a Western hostage by the jihadist group, beginning with the killing of American journalist James Foley in August.
  5. Ahead of the APEC summit at Beijing next month, China has mobilised an army of over 850,000 vigilantes to be on the look out for "terrorists", adding teeth to the country's war on terror, specially against militants from the restive Xinjiang province.

  1. China has flight tested an upgraded version of its 10,000-km range Dongfeng missile which could reach most of the US and European cities, days ahead of its October 1st National Day to demonstrate its nuclear capability.

  • The Asian Games wrapped up today (4th October 2014) with China dominating the gold-medal count and North Korea stealing the limelight.

  • 14 world records were set during the games, which brought together more than 9,500 athletes from 45 countries. Jakarta will be the host for the 2018 Asian Games.

Important details about Asian Games 2014

The Asian Games, also known as Asiad, is a Pan-continental multi-sport event held every four years among athletes from all over Asia. Till now, nine nations have hosted the Asian Games. Forty-six nations have participated in the Games, including Israel, which was excluded from the Games after their last participation in 1974.The 17th Asian Games are the recent version, which were held in Incheon, South Korea from 19 September 2014 to 4th  October 2014.

China has topped the medal table (9th consecutive time). With a total of 342 medals including 151 gold, 108 silver and 83 bronze. India ended with 57 medals to finish in eighth place. With 11 gold, 10 silver and 36 bronze (in 2010 India won 65 medals – 14 gold, 17 silver and 34 bronze). Hosts South Korea were second with 79 golds while Japan finished third with 47 yellow metals.   • People Across the Country Celebrated Dussehra, to mark the victory of good over evil.
  • Dussehra is derived from Sanskrit word "Dasha-hara", which means the removal of 10 bad qualities.
  • The festival is also known as Vijaya Dashami, Dasara or Dashain in different places.
  • Seeking to reach out to more people, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today addressed the countrymen over radio for the first time, giving a pep talk about how to shed despondency and use their skills for betterment and prosperity of the country. 
  • In order to increase the revenues, the Indian Railways has decided to sell Tatkal tickets at a higher rate. Passengers buying Tatkal tickets for the Delhi-Mumbai Rajdhani and 80 other trains will have to shell out more money from today.

  • The Australian cabinet has given its approval for fighter jets to join the US-led military action against Islamic State targets in Iraq.
  • Over 2 million Muslims from around the world gathered at a desert hill near Mecca in Saudi Arabia in an act of faith and repentance during the climactic emotional and spiritual moment of the annual hajj pilgrimage.
  • Saudi Arabia has made contingency plans in the event of an Ebola outbreak, including deploying medical staff at airports and setting up isolation units as nearly three million Muslims from across the world flock to perform the hajj pilgrimage.

  • The world oil prices have dropped to their lowest levels in more than a year.
  • The move follows the decision by Saudi Arabia, one of the world's largest oil producers to cut its oil prices for the fourth month in a row but without any signs of cutting its production to ease the glut in the global supply.
  • Travel industry body International Air Transport Association (IATA) said that India's domestic market increased by 7.4 percent in August over the previous year.

  • The ambitious Swachh Bharat campaign will be launched tomorrow (2nd October 2014), the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

Important Details about India's Mars Orbiter Mission / Mangalyaan


1.The Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM), also called as Mangalyaan (Mangalyan is an unofficial name)


2.This program is run by ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization)

3.Manufactured by Indian Space Research Organisation Satellite Centre (ISAC)

4.Launched into Earth orbit on 5th November 2013

5.It was launched from Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh.

6.This project is aimed as a "technology demonstrator". It will showcase and prove the capability for interplanetary missions

7.The launch was made using PSLV-XL C25 rocket

8.The orbiter will have a life of 6 to 10 months in the orbit

9.While orbiting Mars the orbiter will study surface features, minerals and atmosphere on Mars

10.There are 5 main instruments on the orbiter:

A.Lyman-Alpha Photometer (LAP)

B.Methane Sensor For Mars (MSM)

C.Mars Exospheric Neutral Composition Analyser (MENCA)

D.Thermal Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (TIS)

E.Mars Colour Camera (MCC)

11.It was successfully inserted into orbit of Mars on 24 September 2014

12.India the first Asian nation to reach Mars orbit.

13.The Mars Orbiter Mission was achieved on a budget of $74 million, nearly a tenth of the 
amount the US space agency Nasa spent on sending the Maven
spacecraft to Mars.
