National Affairs

  1. 10 day long Dasara celebrations at Mysore concluded today with the famous Jamboo Savari, procession. 
  2. 33 killed and several injured in stampede in Patna after Dussehra celebration; Home Ministry seeks report from Bihar Government.
  3. Chief Election Commissioner V S Sampath today said that for the first time, five police observers will be deployed in Haryana to ensure free, fair and clean polling in the state where election is due on October 15.
  4. President Pranab Mukherjee inaugurated the 65th TB Seal Campaign of the Tuberculosis Association of India at New Delhi today.
International Affairs


  1. World Animal Day (4th October 2014) celebrated across the globe. 
  2. India's intellectual property regime is fully compliant with WTO norms, the government said today, two days after the two countries decided to set up a high-level working group on IPR during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's US visit to sort out the contentious issue.
  3. Islamic State militants (also known as ISIL) claimed the beheading of a British aid worker Alan Henning, and suggested an American hostage may be killed next, in what they said was retaliation for the U.S.-led campaign against the group.
  4. This is the fourth beheading of a Western hostage by the jihadist group, beginning with the killing of American journalist James Foley in August.
  5. Ahead of the APEC summit at Beijing next month, China has mobilised an army of over 850,000 vigilantes to be on the look out for "terrorists", adding teeth to the country's war on terror, specially against militants from the restive Xinjiang province. 

Science & Technology

  1. China has flight tested an upgraded version of its 10,000-km range Dongfeng missile which could reach most of the US and European cities, days ahead of its October 1st National Day to demonstrate its nuclear capability. 
  2. Facebook said that it has stepped up its battle against spammers who promise to deliver "likes" to its members, and warned users on using such scams.

Sports

  • Asian Games 2014
  • The Asian Games wrapped up today (4th October 2014) with China dominating the gold-medal count and North Korea stealing the limelight.
  • India finished their campaign yesterday with 11 Gold, 10 Silver, and 36 Bronze and hold the 8th spot in the medal standings. (Download Complete Award Winners List from here)
  • 14 world records were set during the games, which brought together more than 9,500 athletes from 45 countries. Jakarta will be the host for the 2018 Asian Games.
  • Champions League Twenty20 2014
  • The Chennai Super Kings won their 2nd CLT20 title against Kolkata Knight Riders, defeating them by 8 wickets.
  • This is the Sixth edition of ChampionsLeague.

Business & Economy

  1. As per the latest data (September 29) by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), 56 coal-based power plants reported critical fuel stocks of less than seven days. As many as 11 power stations were left with nil stocks on the day.
