1.    T M Bhasin elected as Chairman of Indian Banks Association
i. T M Bhasin was elected as Chairman of Indian Banks Association (IBA) . He will be the Chairman of IBA for 2014-15.T M Bhasin is the chairman and managing director of Indian Bank. He replace KR Kamath.

ii. Besides, Chanda Kochhar who is ICICI Bank's managing director, Arun Kaul, CMD of UCO Bank and S L Bansal who is the head of Oriental Bank of Commerce have been elected as the deputy chairpersons of the association. Arundhati Bhattacharya, chairperson of State Bank of India was elected as Honorary Secretary of IBA for 2014-15.

Note: K R Kamath, who is the chairman and managing director of Punjab National Bank, was the previous chairman of this Association. K R Kamath was chairman for two consecutive tenures, that is, 2012-13 and 2013-14.

About Indian Banks Association
i. The Indian Banks' Association (IBA) was formed on the 26 September 1946 with 22 members. As on 1 April 2014 IBA has 189 members.

ii. Homi P Mody was the First Chairman of IBA.

iii. IBA is an association of Indian banks and financial institutions. It is based in Mumbai.
iv. The members comprises of Public Sector Banks, Private Sector Banks, Foreign Banks having offices in India and Urban Co-operative Banks.

2.    RBI notifies increase in deposit money under PPF
i. RBI has notified the increase in deposit money under Public Provident Fund, PPF to 1.5 lakh rupees from 1 lakh rupees.

ii. This is in pursuance to an announcement made by the Finance Minister Arun Jaitley earlier this month. After the new ruling, people can now deposit up to 1.5 lakh rupees annually in their PPF account. The Finance Minister had raised the investment limits in tax saving schemes with an aim to encourage household savings.

3.    INS Kamorta Anti-submarine corvette inducted into the Navy
i. INS Kamorta, an indigenously built anti-submarine warfare corvette, was inducted into the Eastern Fleet of the Indian Navy on Saturday.

ii. INS Kamorta is the first of four ASW stealth corvettes designed by the Navy’s in-house organisation, the Directorate of Naval Design (DND), under Project 28, with around 90 per cent indigenous components. Measuring 110 meters in length, 14 meters in breadth and displacing 3,500 tonnes, the ship can achieve speeds of 25 knots.

iii. The ship is fitted with anti-submarine rockets and torpedoes, medium and close-in weapon systems, and an indigenous surveillance radar.

4.    Eminent Kannada writer UR Anantha Murthy passes away

i.  Eminent Kannada writer and Jnanpith Award winner UR Anantha Murthy, 82, passed away here on Friday.

ii. Anantha Murthy, a writer and critic, was considered one of the pioneers of the Navya movement in Kannada literature.

iii. He is the sixth person among eight recipients of the Jnanpith Award for the Kannada language. In 1998, he was conferred the Padma Bhushan.

iv. He served as the Vice-Chancellor of Mahatma Gandhi University in Kottayam, Kerala, during the late 1980s.

Note: i. Anantha Murthy was one of the finalists of Man Booker International Prize in 2013.

ii. His important literary works include Samskara and Avasthe (both of which were made into movies and won several awards), Bhava and Bharathi Pura. He has also written numerous short stories.

iii. Several of his novels and short fictions have been made into movies. One of his short stories, Bara, was also made into a movie by renowned director MS Sathyu.

5.    Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced Pradhan Mantri Krishi Seenchayi Yojana
i. Pradhan Mantri Krishi Seenchayi Yojana was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi . The Yojna has been announced to meet the irrigation needs of all farmers across the country. Sum of 1000 crore rupees has been allocated for implementation of the scheme.

Background 
Earlier, the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Seenchayi Yojana was proposed in the Lok Sabha on 10 July 2014 by Arun Jaitley, the Union Finance Minister in his maiden Budget Speech. The scheme was planned to provide assured irrigation to mitigate risk to the farmer since bulk of the farm lands are rain fed and it depends on monsoon.

6.    20th edition of annual Delhi Book Fair begins in New Delhi
i. Twentieth edition of annual Delhi Book Fair began at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi today. Theme of the nine- day event is 'Literature in Cinema'.

ii. Around 530 stalls have been set up and 300 publishers are participating in the event. Online booking option to avoid queue and ten air-conditioned buses to ferry visitors from different gates of Pragati Maidan to exhibition halls have been arranged.

iii. Conferences, seminars, painting competitions, book launches and debates have also been planned. Fair is being jointly organised by India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO) and Federation of Indian Publishers(FIP). Entry charge for adult is 20 rupees and for children 10 rupees.

7.    Weightlifter Ragala Venkat Rahul won first gold for India at Youth Olympics
i. Weightlifter Ragala Venkat Rahul on 22 August 2014 bagged Silver medal in the 77 kg category by lifting 141 kg in Snatch and 175 kg in Clean and Jerk to finish with a total of 316 kg. With this, Rahul won India's first medal of the second Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China.

ii. Silver medal of Rahul was also India's first medal in Weightlifting in Youth Olympics. It was also his personal best performance in the total lift, which was six kg more than he did at the 2013 Asian Youth Games held in Nanjing.

iii. Apart from this, Maymon Poulose in the 110 meter hurdles and Mithra Varun in the discus throw qualified for the Final-A stage, which is the second stage.

8.    Veteran CPI-M leader Amitava Nandy died at 71
i. Veteran Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader Amitava Nandy died in Kolkata. He was 71 and was suffering from cancer in pancreas.

ii. He was a Member of Parliament of 14th Lok Sabha (2004-09).

iii. He represented the Dum Dum constituency in North 24 Parganas of West Bengal and was a member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) political party.

9.    Guru Hanuman Akhara chosen for 2014 Rashtritya Khel Protsahan Puraskar
i. Guru Hanuman Akhara, a Delhi-based wrestling academy was chosen for the 2014 Rashtritya Khel Protsahan Puraskar (RKPP) . The Akhara was chosen in the category of establishment and management of sports academies of excellence.

ii. Rashtritya Khel Protsahan Puraskar will be given on 29 August 2014 at the National Sports Awards function by the President of India, Pranab Mukherjee along with Arjuna, Dronacharya and Dhyan Chand awards.

Other awardees of Rashtritya Khel Protsahan Puraskar are
i. Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (employment of sports persons and sports welfare measures)

ii. Jindal Steel Works (community sports — identification and nurturing of budding/young talent)

iii. Child Link Foundation of India — Magic Bus (other forms of sports activities not covered in the categories mentioned in the schemes)

10.  Afghanistan celebrated 95th Independence Day
i. Afghanistan celebrated its 95th Independence Day on 19 August 2014. It is celebrated to mark the signing of the 1919 Anglo-Afghan treaty, which gave the country complete independence from British Empire.

ii. The Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on this eve greeted Afghanistan’s President Hamid Karzai on behalf the Government and people of India.

  • Month-long Madras Week celebrations - to mark the city's 375th birthday begin today .
  • Organized by the Directorate of Film Festivals of the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting at Siri Fort Auditorium in New Delhi, the three-day long North-East Film Festival (first edition) begins today. 
  • Opening film is 'Khawnglung Run’ by Mapuia Chawngthu
  • The Assam and Nagaland governments, in the presence of Union MoS for Home Kiren Rijiju, mutually agreed to resolve the border row amicably and to form a joint mechanism to work out a solution to the problem.
  • Finance Minister Arun Jaitley’s comment describing the 2012 Delhi gang-rape as “one small incident of rape in Delhi” that hit Indian tourism has been picked up for strong condemnation on social media. "I regret words used was construed as insensitive, not my intention" he later apologized.
  • The Supreme Court today asked the Centre to decide by September 9 on the status of Leader of Opposition (to represent the Lokpal Selection committee) and made it clear that the Lokpal legislation could not be put into cold storage.
  • The week-long Srinagar Book Fair organized by the National Book Trust (NBT) will kick start tomorrow with an aim to promote book reading habits among the people and revive the intellectual culture in Kashmir Valley.

  • Union finance ministry today increased import duty on sugar to prevent flow of import entering the contry. The duty on raw and refined sugar has been increased from 15% at present to 25% by a notification dated 21 August.
  • Government will initially spend Rs 69,524 crore on various IT and telecom projects under the 'Digital India' programme'. 
  • Arvind Lifestyle Brands, a subsidiary of Arvind, a leading integrated textile player, on Friday, announced a tie-up with Gap Inc. of the U.S. to open Gap stores in India (first stores are expected to open in Mumbai and Delhi in mid-2015).
  • Undisclosed income to the tune of Rs. 90,000 crore was detected during 2013-14 in various searches and surveys conducted by the Income Tax department, a top official from the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) said today.

The list has been topped by California-based global cloud computing company Salesforce for the fourth year in a row.
  • The Reserve Bank today said its surplus (profit) for the FY’14 fiscal declined 14.75 per cent to Rs. 52,679 crore as its interest income from investments in foreign sovereign bonds declined during the year even as its investments increased.
  • RBI projects 5.5 per cent GDP growth this fiscal, but rules out too much impact of deficient monsoons.
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI), today tightened the norms for giving loans against shares by non-banking financial companies (NBFCs).
  • The Finance Ministry today expressed hope that domestic diesel prices will soon become market linked in the backdrop of softening global crude oil rates.
  • Engineering major Larsen & Toubro today said it has bagged contracts worth Rs. 1,832 crore from various business segments since July.

  • Manchester United completed the signing of Argentina defender Marcos Rojo from Sporting Lisbon today. In a five-year deal reportedly worth around £16 million, full-back Rojo arrives at the club while winger Nani returns to his former club on a season-long loan.
  • Barcelona confirmed they will appeal to the Court of Arbitration in Sport (CAS) after FIFA upheld its decision to ban the club from signing for the next two transfer windows for irregularities over the signing of underage players.

  • A court in Manipur today ordered the release of Irom Sharmila who has staged a 14-year hunger strike in protest at human rights abuses in Manipur.
  • Taking a step further towards scrapping the Planning Commission, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today invited ideas from the people on the new institution to replace the plan body.The government also announced creation of a special open forum on the website mygov.nic.in for suggestions on the new institution. 
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi today laid the foundation stone of 166 km Kaithal- Rajasthan border section of the National Highway-Haryana. 
  • The Supreme Court today issued notices to Centre and the Jammu and Kashmir government on a plea challenging the provisions of Article 370, which provides special status to the state.  
  • The Supreme Court today issued notice to the Centre on a plea seeking its direction to the government to amend the Constitution for making Hindi official language for conducting court proceedings in higher judiciary. 
  • In a bid to have an accident-free operation in the national capital, Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) has introduced a "Road Safety Award" for its drivers who will have a good track record.

  • Israel and Palestine have agreed to extend a temporary ceasefire in Gaza by 24 hours to allow more time for negotiating a lasting truce. 
  • The World Health Organization today said that it had set up a task force with the global airline and tourism industry in an effort to contain the spread of Ebola.
  • The Ebola outbreak in West Africa has killed more than 1,200 people since it began in December 2013, the World Health Organisation said.
  • The United States has said it was "unfortunate" that the Indo-Pak Foreign Secretary-level talks have fallen through and asked both the countries to take steps to improve bilateral ties irrespective of what happened.  
  • German Chancellor Angela Merkel will visit Ukraine on Saturday (23rd August 2014) amid international tensions over fighting in the east of the country, Ukraine's foreign minister Pavlo Klimkin said.  
  • Cameroon has closed all its land, sea and air borders with Nigeria in a move to help prevent the spread of the Ebola virus.
  • US President Barack Obama will chair a special meeting of the UN Security Council next month on tackling the surge of foreign fighters in Iraq and Syria.

  • Angered by Pakistan's consultations with Kashmiri separatists, India today called off next week's talks (scheduled to be held on 25th August 2014 in Islamabad) between Foreign Secretaries, telling it bluntly to choose between an Indo-Pak dialogue or hobnobbing with the separatists.

  • Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar shared a meal with HIV-positive children, to dispel the misconception that the dreaded disease is transmitted by a mere touch.
  • The Election Commission has moved the Law Ministry with a proposal for introduction of 'Totaliser' machine for counting of votes. This new machine will enhance secrecy of votes during counting which prevents disclosure of voting pattern.
  • After a two-day lull, Pakistani troops violated the ceasefire twice today by resorting to heavy firing with automatic and small arms along International Border and Line of Control in Jammu and Poonch districts of Jammu and Kashmir, forcing Indian troops to retaliate.

  • President Pranab Mukherjee addressed the nation on the eve of 68th Independence Day.
  • In a major setback to the smokers, the Supreme Court today issued notice to the Centre and all states on a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking a ban on cigarettes and bidis in the country.
  • Two Kolhapur women, who were sentenced to death in 2001 for kidnapping 13 children and killing nine of them, may become the first women ever to be hanged in India. The buffer period before their hanging - time taken by the state home department to inform all concerned after receiving the note from Rashtrapati Bhavan - ends on Saturday.
  • Sher Singh Rana, the lone convict in the sensational murder of bandit-turned-politician Phoolan Devi in New Delhi in 2001, was on Thursday awarded life imprisonment by a Delhi court which also imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on him.
  • Notwithstanding  reservations of judiciary,  Parliament Thursday cleared two bills providing for a  new mechanism for appointment of judges to higher judiciary by scrapping the collegium system that had come under attack from political parties and others.

  1. Six stations on New Delhi-Howrah sector including New Delhi, Kanpur, Allahabad, Dhanbad, Asansol and Howrah have counters for use of this smart card, while six other counters for use of this service will be available in New Delhi-Mumbai sector.
  2. Similar to the smart card operational in Metro service
  3. The card can be issued by paying Rs 70 where passenger can get Rs 20 balance at the designated station.
  4. After that the card can be recharged for Rs 20 or in multiples of Rs 50 up to Rs 5,000.
  5. Maximum limit of the ‘Go India’ card is being kept at Rs 10,000. The smart card has lifetime validity.
