1.    Laxmikant Parsekar is new Goa CM

i. Laxmikant Parsekar was sworn-in as Goa Chief Minister. Nine other Ministers also take oath on Saturday.
ii. Earlier, Senior BJP leader Rajiv Pratap Rudy said Laxmikant Parsekar, currently health minister, was unanimously elected at the legislature party meeting and chosen as the next Goa chief minister. 
iii. Parsekar, MLA from Mandrem constituency, would be sworn-in as Chief Minister at 4 p.m. at Raj Bhavan today
iv. Earlier, Parrikar faxed his resignation to Governor Mridula Sinha at Raj Bhavan. The 58-year-old technocrat- turned politician had taken over as Chief Minister in March 2012 after BJP rode to power in the coastal state.

2.    India and Bhutan signed MoU to develop Nalanda University
i. India and Bhutan on 7 November 2014 signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop Nalanda University in Bihar as an international centre of excellence.
ii. According to the MoU, the Nalanda University will be located at Rajgir in Bihar and will have the power to confer degrees, diplomas and certificates. 
iii. As per the MoU, India will provide appropriate visa to students, faculty and staff for travelling to India to study or work in the University. The funding for the establishment and operations of the University will be on a voluntary basis.

3.    Chinese payments company China UnionPay to set up shop in India
i. China UnionPay (CUP), the payments company which was created to rival Visa and MasterCard in the Middle Kingdom, is setting up shop in India.
ii. The Reserve Bank of India is also considering a bilateral arrangement whereby CUP cards are accepted in the country and India's RuPay cards are accepted in China.
iii. Bankers said that the fact that the company is seeking to fill positions in India could only mean that it has some in principle approval from the central bank.

Note: i. CUP cards are accepted in over 140 countries across the world and the payments giant is keen on enabling acceptance in India.
ii. At present, both CUP and RuPay have an agreement with US card company Discover to use the latter's global network for facilitating international payments.
iii. Through the Discover network, RuPay cards can be used in China and CUP cards can be used in India. A direct agreement will enable both cardholders to make payments in each other's country without going through an intern.

4.    Axis Bank inks MoU with South Korean NongHyup Bank
i. Private sector lender Axis Bank has signed a pact with NongHyup Bank (NH Bank) to enhance cooperation in treasury, trade and other business between India and South Korea.
ii. The MoU, will serve to strengthen existing ties between the two banks and will help facilitate and enhance cooperation in the areas of treasury, srade and other business," Axis Bank said in a release.
iii. The MoU aims to reinforce trade and economic relationship between South Korea and India, and will promote mutual development through business cooperation.
iv. NH Bank is one of the largest banks in South Korea with an asset base of $185 billion.

5.    Singapore keen to develop new Andhra capital
i. Union Minister for Urban Development M Venkaiah Naidu has said Singapore has shown keen interest in partnering with India in the urban development sector, including a smart satellite city and a new capital for the state of Andhra Pradesh.
ii. Top leadership of Singapore conveyed their areas of interest during the talks the Minister held today with Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and former Prime Minister and Emeritus Minister Goh Chok Tong in Singapore, in separate meetings.
iii. Venkaiah Naidu sought Singapore’s assistance in promoting smart city features like Intelligent Transport Systems, e-urban governance including delivery of services, water management including recycling and solid waste management.

6.    Suzlon Energy installed world’s tallest hybrid wind generator turbine in Kutch
i. The largest wind turbine manufacturer Suzlon Energy installed the world’s tallest hybrid wind generator turbine in Kutch, Gujarat.
ii. The turbine will generate 12-15 percent more energy.
iii. The 120-metre hybrid turbine is taller than conventional wind turbine towers by 40 metres. With this new turbine, the installed wind energy capacity at the Kutch region of Gujarat has gone up to 1100 MW. It makes it the Asia’s biggest wind energy park at one location.
iv. This tower is ideal for low wind areas and the potential is huge. In the next three years, this region will have 2000 MW of wind energy capacity.

7.    Burger King partnered with eBay to launch its burgers online
i. Burger King partnered with eBay to launch its burgers online in India.
ii. Consumers will be able to pre-order Burger King's signature burger Whopper, one of the world's most popular five-inch diameter burgers, for a limited time period.
iii. The company offered the pre-ordering of Whopper online for 128 rupees and only select consumers will be able to redeem their coupons at Burger King Outlets.
iv. The Burger King is launching its first store in New Delhi which is followed by subsequent launches in other 10 other locations.

8.    Indian-origin politician Keith Vaz named as Labour MP of the Year
i. Indian-origin British politician Nigel Keith Anthony Standish Vaz known as Keith Vaz was on 6 November 2014 named as the Labour MP of the year 2014.
ii. He was choosen for this award for his valuable work for underrepresented, deprived and minority sections of the country.
iii. Speaker of the house John Bercow announced the Patchwork Foundation MPs of the Year 2014 at Speakers House.  The awards were announced for those who have represented and worked with underrepresented, deprived and minority communities across the country.

9.    Havells India Limited chairman Qimat Rai Gupta passed away
i. The electrical equipment maker Havells India Limited group chairman Qimat Rai Gupta passed away. He was 77.
ii. Qimat Rai Gupta started Havells India Limited in 1971 and transformed it to a multinational company with operations across 51 countries.
iii. Gupta's big moment came in 2007 when Havells acquired Europe headquartered Sylvania Lighting thus registering Havells amongst top 4 lighting companies in the world.

10.  World Chess Championship 2014 begins in Russia today
i. World Chess Championship 2014 begins in Sochi, Russia today.
ii. Indian Grandmaster Vishwanathan Anand will take on reigning champion Magnus Carlsen of Norway in the first of the twelve games to be played.
iii. The match will begin at 5:30 PM Indian Time. Five-time world champion Anand will take the white piece in the first game.
iv. Anand bids to reclaim the world title, which he lost to Magnus Carlsen, last November.
v. The first player to attain Six and a Half points will become world champion.
vi. The championship is being held under the auspices of the World Chess Federation (FIDE).

1.    PM Modi adopts Jayapur village, seeks end to female foeticide 


i. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday strongly pitched for ending the wretched practice of female foeticide as he adopted Jayapur village in his Lok Sabha constituency, urging villagers to give up dependence on governments for solving their problems. 
ii. The Prime Minister won many hearts when he got up from his seat to adjust the mike for the village head Durga Devi. 
iii. Referring to a recent report which found that 40 per cent of children died young in a neighbouring country as they did not wash their hands before eating, Modi said villagers should pledge that they would not let their kids eat without washing hands. 
iv. Pitching for modernisation of the textile sector, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday asked the weavers to utilise the growing e-commerce market to reach out to global consumers even as he announced a package of Rs 2,375 crore to revive banks in eastern UP. 

2.    Scientists developed a new drug Staphefekt to replace antibiotics
i. Scientists for the first time developed antibiotic-free drug named Staphefekt as an alternative to antibiotics.
ii. This new drug will aid in the fight against the antibiotics-resistant superbugs such as MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus). 

About Staphefekt
i. Staphefekt is based on a naturally occurring enzyme called endolysins produced by viruses and attacks infections differently to antibiotics. Unlike antibiotics, it does not destroy the harmless bacteria that live in the body.
ii. Endolysins (enzymes) exist in nature but the scientist made a modified version that combines the bit that is best at binding to the bacteria with another bit so that it is best at killing it.
iii. Staphefekt is already used as a cream to treat skin infections and researchers hope to create pill and injectable forms in future.
iv. Healthcare experts looking for the alternative for antibiotics because 5000 deaths in a year are linked to drug resistance diseases.

3.    Indian economy to grow 5.4% this year: OECD
i. Paris-based think tank Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, OECD has projected 5.4 percent growth for the Indian economy this year as global recovery continues at a moderate pace.
ii. Earlier in September, it had projected 5.7 per cent growth rate for India. According to the advanced G20 release of the OECD's latest Economic Outlook, growth will strengthen in India as investment picks up, from a 5.4 per cent rate in 2014 to 6.4 per cent in 2015 and 6.6 per cent in 2016. 
iii. OECD Secretary-General Angel Gurría said a number of business-friendly measures have been adopted over the past few months in India.
iv. OECD is a grouping of 34 countries.

4.    Tribal leader Ganpat Vasava set to become Gujarat Speaker
i. BJP today nominated southern Gujarat tribal MLA and present cabinet minister Ganpat Vasava for the post of Speaker of State assembly.
ii. Mr. Vasava will be formally elected as Speaker of Gujarat assembly during a two-day assembly session scheduled to meet next week. He will replace former Speaker Mr. Vajubhai Vala, who had resigned after his appointment as Governor of Karnataka. 

5.    Facebook launches Ebola charity donation button
i. Facebook is stepping up its efforts to fight Ebola by adding a button designed to make it easier for its users to donate to charities battling the disease.
ii. The social media company is also deploying 100 satellite communication terminals to boost Internet and phone services to affected areas in West Africa, where the disease has killed nearly 5,000.
iii. The programmes come on the heels of a $25 million donation last month by CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention toward the Ebola response.
iv. Facebook says that, over the coming week, its users will see an option to donate to three nonprofits fighting Ebola.
v. The groups are the International Medical Corps, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, and Save the Children. Facebook says it chose charities that work directly on the ground and are able to accept money globally.

6.    Govt allocates Rs 5,000 crore under AYUSH Mission
i. The government has allocated five thousand crore rupees under AYUSH Mission for promoting traditional methods of treatment in the country.
ii. Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan said that through the mission, the government will provide assistance to States in strengthening planning and infrastructure for promoting Ayurveda,Yoga Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy, AYUSH. 
iii. Dr Vardhan also said that the 12 new AIIMS like institutes being set up in various parts of the country will have large department of AYUSH so there should be an integration with allopathic methods and holistic approach be developed.

7.    Cristiano Ronaldo received 2013-14 European Golden Boot award
i. Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo received his 2013-14 European Golden Boot award on 5 November 2014 at the Meliá Castilla hotel in Madrid.
ii. The Portuguese star was awarded for being joint top-goal scorer last season in Europe along with Luis Suarez, having hit 31 goals. 
iii. Suarez was presented with his award by ex-Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish in October 2014 and now Ronaldo has followed suit.
iv. This was the third Golden Shoe for Ronaldo who also won the prize at Manchester United in 2007-08 with 31 goals and earlier in his Madrid career in 2010-11 with 40.

8.    India-Arab League officials meeting in New Delhi
i. Officials from India and the Arab League are meeting in New Delhi today to discuss enhancing cooperation in trade and investment, energy and food security.
ii. The two sides will hold deliberations on environment protection, agriculture and education besides regional and international issues of mutual interest. The Indian side is being represented by Secretary East, Anil Wadhwa.

1.    Sachin Tendulkar unveils his autobiography 'Playing it My Way'

i. Sachin Tendulkar's much-awaited autobiography 'Playing It My Way' was on Wednesday launched in the presence of some of his former teammates, celebrities and family members at an engrossing ceremony in Mumbai.

ii. The book, the first copy of which he gave to his mother Rajni earlier in the day, was unveiled by Tendulkar himself amid thundering applause by the gathering. 
ii. At the launch, Tendulkar presented a copy to his mentor and childhood coach Ramakant Achrekar in the presence of his daughter Sara. 
iii. "I would like to present the first copy after launch to somebody very special in my life, Tendulkar said before handing over a copy of the book to a wheelchair-bound Achrekar. 
iv. Before the launch of the book, cricket analyst and host for the evening Harsha Bhogle had three panel discussion sessions with Tendulkar's former teammates and family, who significantly feature in the book. 
v. The first panel discussion was attended by former India captains Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Vengsarkar, Ravi Shastri and former Mumbai cricketer Vasu Paranjape, who played a crucial role in shaping Tendulkar's career. 
vi. Gavaskar remembered how he met Tendulkar for the first time and was impressed by his talent at the first look. 

2.    Guru Nanak Jayanti being celebrated today

i. The birth anniversary of the first Sikh Guru, Guru Nanak Dev ji is being celebrated across the country today with traditional fervour and gaiety. 
ii. The day, which falls on Kartik Poornima, is celebrated as Prakash Utsav. Several functions are being held across the country to mark the occasion. 
iii. Devotees in larger numbers are thronging Gurudwaras across the country to pay their obeisance to the great spiritual leader. Akhand Path is also performed at Gurudwaras. 
iv. The President, Vice President and Prime Minister have greeted the people on the occasion. 
v. The President Pranab Mukherjee said that Guru Nanak's message of compassion and equality of all human beings is of timeless relevance. Let us on this day recall his sublime teachings and strive for the upliftment of the weak and downtrodden in order to create a society devoid of all social distinctions. 
vi. The Vice President Hamid Ansari said that Guru Nanak's divine message of truth, compassion and tolerance has eternal relevance for liberation of humanity from violence, bigotry and injustice. 

3.    RBI asks banks to alert customers before clearing suspicious or high value cheques
i. To prevent rising cheque-related fraud cases, the Reserve Bank of India has asked banks to alert the account holders by a phone call and contact the base branch in case of non-home cheques before clearing suspicious or high value payments. 
ii. The RBI also asked banks to send an SMS alert to payer or drawer when cheques are received for clearing and examine cheques under UV lamp for clearance beyond 2 lakh rupees. The apex bank, further, said multi-level checking should be done before clearing cheques above 5 lakh rupees.
iii. It also advised banks to review and strengthen the controls in the cheque presenting or passing and account monitoring processes. The central bank maintained that due diligence should be observed at the time of handling or processing of the cheques

4.    Mumbai recorded the largest number of Internet users in India in 2014
i. Mumbai recorded the largest number of internet users in India in 2014. This was revealed by a study conducted by the Internet & Mobile Association of India (IAMAI).
ii. According to the study, Mumbai recorded 16.4 million internet users surpassing Delhi and Kolkata. Delhi recorded 12.15 million internet users and Kolkata recorded 6.27 million internet users.
iii. Delhi was second with a user base of 12.1 million. The National Capital recorded the fastest year-on-year growth rate of 50 per cent in Internet user base among top eight cities of the country.
iv. India had about 243 million Internet users as of June 2014, according to IAMAI.
v. Top eight cities -- Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad and Pune -- accounted for over 58 million Internet users, the study said. Kolkata ranked third in the list with 6.27 million users, followed by Bangalore (5.99 million) and Chennai (5.58 million).
vi. "Overall, the top four metros have a 23 per cent penetration of Internet users users in India. The other four metros have 11 per cent penetration," it said

5.    India ranks 7th in world list for peer citations in research journals
i. If citations by peers of research work done by scholars is a good benchmarking index, then Indian scholars rank second to China in the Asiatic region but is pushed to seventh place in the world rankings.
ii. China had almost 36,000 citable documents in the business, management and accounting areas, while India had nearly 14,000 citations. However, in the world map, the US was far ahead with 1.6 lakh citations in the top rank.
iii. Kulbhushan Balooni, Director-incharge, IIM Kozhikode, delivering the keynote address at the inaugural session of the Pan IIM World Management conference at the institute campus, gave out these figures to stress the importance of research.

6.    Forbes list of World's Most Powerful People 2014 released
i. The Forbes list of the World's Most Powerful People 2014 was released in which Russian President Vladimir Putin is on the top followed by Barack Obama and XI Jinping.  
ii. The list gives the annual ranking of the World’s 72 Most Powerful People on the basis of their financial resources, scope and use of power and the number of people they impact. 
iii. The list features 17 heads who run nations with a combined GDP of around 48 trillion US dollars.

i. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi made his debut in the world's most powerful people list. He ranked 15th on the Forbes list. Modi was credited for the massive reconstruction projects in his home state of Gujarat. His administration promises to bring economic rejuvenation to other beleaguered parts of India.
ii. The next Indian on the list is Mukesh Ambani at 36th rank. Ambani has business ventures in petrochemicals, manufacturing, oil and gas production, and now wireless sectors.

7.    MS Dhoni named as captain of ICC ODI Team of the Year 2014
i. Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni on 5 November 2014 was named as the captain of ICC ODI Team of the Year 2014.
ii. He has been selected in the ICC ODI team of the year for the eight time (seventh year in a row), while fifth year as a captain of the team.
iii. The selected ICC ODI team was chosen by a specially appointed selection panel chaired by the ICC’s Cricket Committee chairman and former India captain Anil Kumble. 

8.    Angelo Mathews named as captain of the ICC Test Team of the Year 2014
i. The ICC on Wednesday announced its Test and ODI Teams of the Year, as chosen by a specially appointed selection panel, chaired by the ICC's Cricket Committee chairman, and former India captain Anil Kumble.
ii. Sri Lanka skipper, Angelo Mathews, has been named as captain of the ICC Test Team of the Year 2014, that also includes two more Sri Lankans in Kumar Sangakkara and Rangana Herath.
iii. This is the seventh time since 2006 that Sangakkara has been selected in the squad. He missed out on selection in 2009 and 2013.
iv. India skipper, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, has been selected in the ICC ODI Team of the Year, for the eight time (seventh year in a row), while it is the fifth year that he has been appointed captain.
v. Anil Kumble announced the team at a media conference, at the ICC Headquarters in Dubai, where ICC Chief Executive David Richardson, also announced the short-lists for the LG ICC Awards 2014.

9.    Mark Ramprakash hired as England batting coach
i. Former England international Mark Ramprakash has been hired as batting coach for the national team with immediate effect.
ii. The 45-year-old Ramprakash, who played in 52 tests in an 11-year international career, will coach across all formats starting in the one-day series against Sri Lanka this month.

10.  Djokovic retains Paris Masters title
i. Top—ranked Novak Djokovic easily defended his Paris Masters title with a 6—2, 6—3 victory over Milos Raonic on Sunday.
ii. Djokovic, who did not drop a set during the whole week, won the indoor tournament for the third time and claimed the 20th Masters title of his career.
iii. The Serb also made a big step in his bid to finish the year at the No. 1 spot for a third time, extending his lead over Roger Federer before the ATP Finals in London.
iv. The 23—year—old Raonic, who has never beaten Djokovic in their four meetings, appeared apprehensive and could not convert his few openings.

11.  Mathews, Sangakkara propel Sri Lanka to 274
i. Skipper Angelo Mathews struck a fighting fifty to lift a struggling Sri Lanka to 274 for eight against India in the second one—day International at the Sardar Patel Stadium, Motera, in Ahmedabad on Thursday.
ii. Electing to bat, the visitors lost early wickets but Mathews’ unbeaten 92 -- his innings laced with 10 fours and a six -- and Kumar Sangakkara’s valiant 61 took the side to respectability. The duo stitched a crucial 90—run fourth—wicket partnership after Lanka were struggling at 64 for three.
iii. With the visitors being reduced to 220 for eight in the 44th over, Mathews got support from number—ten batsman Dhammika Prasad and the duo stitched a valuable 54—run unbeaten partnership to give the islanders the necessary push in the end.

1.    World's first inhalable Ebola vaccine passed animal tests
i. The world's first inhalable Ebola vaccine in development has proved highly successful in animal studies.
ii. Scientists from the University of Texas have confirmed that a potentially breathable, respiratory vaccine in development has been shown to provide long-term protection for non-human primates against the deadly Ebola virus.
iii. Results from a recent pre-clinical study represent the only proof to date that a single dose of a non-injectable vaccine platform for Ebola is long lasting, which could have significant global implications in controlling future outbreaks.
iv. A breathable vaccine could surmount the logistical obstacles of storing, transporting and administering injectable vaccines in parts of Africa most afflicted by the virus.
v. Professor Maria Croyle along with Dr Gary Kobinger at the National Microbiology Laboratory in Winnipeg will make the announcement on Nov 5.

2.    Anita Kapur is CBDT new chairperson
i. Senior IRS officer Anita Kapur has been appointed as the new chairperson of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), the apex authority of the Income-Tax Department.
ii. Kapur, a 1978-batch officer of the Income-Tax cadre, was till now serving as Member (Legislation and Computerisation and Income-Tax) in CBDT.
iii. She took over the top charge after her appointment was announced by the government as incumbent CBDT Chairman K V Chowdary retired on October 31, a senior official said.
iv. Chowdary was later appointed as an Advisor to the Special Investigation Team (SIT) on black money headed by retired Supreme Court Judge M B Shah.
v. Kapur will be in office till November next year.

3.    UBI decides to continue with five free ATM transactions
i. The United Bank of India (UBI) on Wednesday decided to continue with five free ATM transactions per month (including non financial ones) at other bank ATMs for all savings account holders in both metros and non-metros.
ii. According to a release issued by the bank, it has also decided to continue with free transactions at its own ATM network without levying any cap.
iii. According to Sanjay Arya, Executive Director, UBI, by putting a further cap on ATM transactions may lead to increased footfall at branches thereby resulting in higher operating costs.

Note: As per the new guidelines of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), banks in six metros – New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad and Bangalore – are free to charge other bank customers beyond 3 ATM transactions per month. Banks have also been allowed to restrict free transactions to 5 for customers at its own ATM network.

4.    HDFC became first listed Indian company to have 75% shareholding by FIIs
i. The mortgage financier HDFC became the first listed Indian company among the 30 SENSEX firms to have more than 75 percent shareholding by Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs).
ii. It happened after the FIIs raised their stake in the company to a record-high of nearly 78 percent during the July-September 2014 quarter.
iii. Cumulative FII holdings in the company rose from 73.09 percent in July-September 2013 to 77.85 percent in the July-September 2014. In the April-June 2014 quarter, FIIs' holding in HDFC stood at 77.36 percent.
iv. Moreover, shareholding of FIIs in HDFC has been steadily rising since September 2013. The rise in the shareholding of the FIIs in the company is the result of smart returns given by the company.
v. The rise of overseas shareholding in the mortgage lender coincides with overall bullishness shown by foreign entities in the Indian stock market.

5.    Govt reconstitutes PM's Council on Climate Change
i. Eminent environmental scientist R.K. Pachauri and economist Nitin Desai have been included in the newly re-constituted 18-member panel of Prime Minister’s Council on Climate Change.
ii. The panel, chaired by the Prime Minister also comprises eight ministers including of External Affairs and Finance.
iii. The panel will work to evolve a coordinated response to issues relating to climate change at national level.
iv. The committee will provide oversight for formulation of action plans in the area of assessment, adaptation and mitigation of climate change, besides periodically monitoring key policy decisions.
v. The Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change will assist PMO in facilitating the work of this Committee.

6.    Pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar bags ICC People's choice award-2014

i. Bhuvaneswar Kumar has been declared as the winner of ICC People's choice award for the year 2014.
ii. He was among one of the four nominees short listed in this category for the prestigious award based on public voting. 
iii. This was announced at a press conference in Dubai by the ICC Chief Executive Dave Richardson and former India Captain Anil Kumble a shortwhile ago.
iv. Bhuvaneswar Kumar becomes the third Indian after Sachin Tendulkar and M S Dhoni to win this award. 
v. Three Indians figure in the ICC ODI team of the year 2014. These includes Virat Kohli, Mohd. Shami and skipper of the ODI team, M S Dhoni. No Indian players figures in the ICC Test team of the year 2014.

7.    Kohli nominated for ICC ODI Cricketer of the Year Award

i. Virat Kohli is the lone Indian male cricketer to be shortlisted for the LG ICC Awards 2014 after he was nominated for the ODI Cricketer of the Year category.
ii. Kohli had earlier won this award in the year 2012. 
iii. Kohli will be fighting for the honour against three South Africans -- Quinton de Kock, AB de Villiers and Dale Steyn. De Villiers had won this award in 2010. 
iv. Indian women's team skipper Mithali Raj has earned nomination in two categories -- Women's ODI Cricketer of the Year and Women's T20I Cricketer of the Year.

1.    Hasmukh Adhia replaces GS Sandhu as Financial Services Secretary
i. Hasmukh Adhia was appointed as the Union Financial Services Secretary (FSS) on 3 November 2014. He is the 1981-batch IAS officer of Gujarat-cadre. 
ii. At the time of being appointed as FSS, Adhia was working as Additional Chief Secretary in the Finance Department of Gujarat government. 
iii. He succeeded GS Sandhu who was made the Chairman of the National Authority for Chemical Weapons Convention. Sandhu is a 1980-batch Rajasthan cadre IAS officer.
iv. He has written two motivational books titled My notes to my Self. The books deal with government administration and practical tips for all bureaucrats to help in day-to-day governance.

2.    NCAER lowers India GDP growth forecast to 5%
i. The National Council of Applied Economic Research has lowered India’s GDP growth forecast to 5 per cent in the current financial year on weak economical fundamentals and uncertainties in growth prospects.
ii. The economic think-tank in its earlier projection had suggested that the Indian economy was likely to grow at 5.7 per cent in 2014-15.
iii. “NCAER is predicting a slower growth for the economy unlike other forecasts. The fundamentals of the economy remain weak with uncertainties prevail. The only redeeming feature is the weakening of inflation and FDI inflows.

3.    Ashwin continues to top Test rankings for all-rounders
i. Ravichandran Ashwin is the lone Indian to feature in the top 10 of the latest Reliance ICC Test Player Rankings as he continues to lead the way in the all-rounders list.
ii. South Africa’s Vernon Philander is second in the Reliance ICC Test Player Rankings for All-rounders behind Ashwin, while Bangaldesh’s Shakib Al Hasan is placed third.
iii. Meanwhile, Pakistan batsmen Younis Khan, Misbah-ul-Haq and Azhar Ali have all improved their rankings in the latest Reliance ICC Test Player Rankings, which were released on Tuesday.
iv. Younis, who scored 213 and 46 in Pakistan’s 356 runs victory, has climbed one place to sixth. The middle-order batsman, who rose to number-one position following his triple century against Sri Lanka in Karachi in 2009, had entered the series in 11th place on 759 ratings points.

4.    Mallikarjun Kharge inducted into the three-member CIC selection committee
i. Mallikarjun Kharge, a leader of Congress in Lok Sabha was inducted into the three-member CIC selection committee.
ii. The committee will select the Chief Information Commissioner (CIC). 
iii. The other two members of the committee are Prime Minister Narendra Modi (as head) and Union Finance and Defence Minister Arun Jaitely. 
iv. Kharge was inducted in the selection committee by virtue of being the leader of the single largest party in the opposition in Lok Sabha as there as there was a lack of clarity on the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha.

Why a Leader of Opposition was required?
The Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2005 says that CIC selection can be done by a three-member panel comprising the Prime Minister, who shall be the Chairperson of the committee, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha and a cabinet minister nominated by the Prime Minister. 

5.    India-Sri Lanka started joint military exercise, Mithra Shakti
i. The special forces of Indian and Sri Lankan armies began a three-week long mock war drill at the Uva-Kudaoya Commando Regiment Training School near Colombo in the island nation. The exercise will continue till 23 November 2014. 
ii. The exercise is seen as New Delhi’s attempts to advance a dialogue, which began with Colombo in 2012 to counter China’s growing influence in the region and is indicative of strengthening bilateral military relations.
iii. This exercise is a part of counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency in the island nation.

6.    New tower of World Trade Center re-opens 13 years after 9/11 attacks

i. In the United States,New tower of World Trade Center re-opened for business more than 13 years after the original towers were destroyed in the 9/11 attacks. Employees of a publishing company are started moving into the 104-storey building in New York.
ii. The $ 3.8 4 billion skyscraper took eight years to build New York's World Trade Center and is now the tallest building in the US. 
iii. The 104-storey building is the centrepiece of the 16-acre site where the twin towers once stood, before they came crashing down, killing about 3000 people. 

7.    Lt Governor Najeeb Jung recommends dissolution of Delhi Assembly
i. Ending the eight-month-long political uncertainty, Lt Governor Najeeb Jung today recommended to the President dissolution of the Delhi Assembly as major players BJP, AAP and Congress have expressed “inability” to form government and preferred holding of polls.
ii. The report by Jung paved the way for holding of fresh polls in the Capital which is under President’s Rule since February after the AAP government quit after ruling for 49 days. The Union Cabinet is likely to take a decision on Jung’s report soon.
iii. Sources in the Lt Governor’s office said Jung in his report to President Pranab Mukherjee mentioned that all three main political parties BJP, AAP and Congress have expressed their inability to form government and conveyed that they were ready to face fresh election.
iv. With all the three main parties favouring fresh mandate, the LG recommended to the President dissolution of the Assembly.

8.    EU cuts growth forecasts as big economies falter
i. European Union slashed its economic growth forecasts for the bloc on Tuesday, indicating the recovery will remain sluggish amid problems for the biggest economies, particularly France.
ii. The official forecast for growth this year in the 18-country eurozone was cut to 0.8 per cent from a prediction of 1.2 per cent made in the spring.
iii. The broader 28-nation E.U., which includes non-euro members like Britain and Sweden, was expected to grow 1.3 per cent this year, down from a 1.6 per cent forecast previously.
iv. “The economic and employment situation is not improving fast enough” in the wake of the financial crisis that has hit the continent for the past half-decade, said E.U. Vice-President Jyrki Katainen.
v. The European Commission blamed in particular a weaker performance in Europe’s larger economies, with the exceptions of Spain and Britain.
vi. Germany, Europe’s largest economy and for years the region’s engine of growth, was expected to stagnate for the rest of the year, with growth “set to resume gradually”.

  • Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has been chosen for one of Japan's top national awards  'The Grand Cordon of the Order of the Paulownia Flowers'.
  • He was honored with this award for  his significant contribution to the enhancement of relations and promotion of friendship between Japan and India for about 35 years.
  • He is the first Indian to receive this rare honour.
  • Brittany Maynard, 29, who campaigned for “Death with dignity”, was suffering from an aggressive malignant brain tumour, died today in Oregon from taking lethal drugs prescribed by a doctor.
  • She moved to Oregon to take advantage of the state’s assisted-suicide law 


MOUs


  • Reeling under severe electricity shortage, the new born state Telangana today signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Chhattisgarh for purchasing 1,000 Megawatt of power.
  • Officials of the two states signed the MoU in the presence of Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao and his Chhattisgarh counterpart Raman Singh in Raipur.

  • NASA has released over 60 space audio recordings including sounds of shuttle launching, Saturn's rings, Neptune, Jupiter, Uranus and famous quotes from astronauts for anyone to hear online.

  • Search giant Google today announced the creation of an Indian Language Internet alliance (ILIA), in partnership with various content providers, to make available local language content on the Internet with an aim to bring 300 million Indians online by 2017.
  • At a function in New Delhi today, Information and Broadcasting Minister PrakashJavadekar launched the alliance.

National Affairs

  • Assam government today announced that they have decided to hand over the cases relating jihadi activities to National Investigation Agency for investigation.
  • The Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said disclosure of names in violation of tax treaties will help account holders as the reciprocating state could refuse any evidence.
  • “An unauthorised disclosure of information is fraught with both investigation and economic consequences. They can sabotage the investigation. They can attract sanctions in the form of withholding taxes,” he said in a Facebook post on a day when Prime Minister Narendra Modi asserted that all efforts would be made to bring back black money stashed abroad.
  • In Kochi, police arrest organisers and sympathizers of controversial "kiss of love" event while protesting against moral policing.
  • With 5.5 lakh posts in police force lying vacant across the country, the Centre has asked all states to fill up the vacancies in a time-bound manner, preferably within a year, as the crime graph is soaring gradually.

1. Bangalore becomes 'Bengaluru'; 11 other cities renamed

i. Shedding the colonial name, Bangalore today became Bengaluru synchronising with the state formation day "Karnataka Rajyotsava".
ii. In tandem, 11 other cities across Karnataka were also rechristened by the state government, casting away the anglicised names.

iii. Now Bangalore will be called Bengaluru, Mangalore (Mangaluru), Mysore (Mysuru), Bellary (Ballari), Belgaum (Belagavi), Hubli (Hubballi), Tumkur (Tumakuru), Bijapur (Vijayapura), Chikmagalur (Chikkamagaluru), Gulbarga (Kalaburagi), Hospet (Hosapete) and Shimoga (Shivamogga).


2. India re-elected to UN Economic and Social Council


i. India has overwhelmingly won its re-election to the UN body on economic and social issues, garnering the highest number of votes in the Asia-Pacific group.
ii. The 193-member UN General Assembly elected 18 members of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) to serve a three-year term beginning January 1, 2015.
iii. India's term at ECOSOC was scheduled to end this year and it was re-elected after getting 183 votes, the highest in the Asia Pacific group, followed by Japan and Pakistan with 181 votes each.
iv. The other 17 members to be elected to ECOSOC apart from India were Argentina, Austria, Brazil, Burkina Faso, Estonia, France, Germany, Ghana, Greece, Honduras, Japan, Mauritania, Pakistan, Portugal, Trinidad and Tobago, Uganda and Zimbabwe.

3. Restriction of 5 times usage of ATM 

i. Using ATMs (automated teller machines) to withdraw money or for other purposes such as balance enquiry beyond five times in a month will attract a levy of Rs.20 a transaction from Saturday.
ii.  bank customers in six metros —Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad and Bangalore — are allowed to withdraw money and/or carry out non-financial transactions like mini-statements at ATMs of banks, where they hold saving/current accounts, free of charge only five times a month.
iii. The RBI, however, clarified that nothing precludes a bank from offering more than three free transactions at other bank ATMs to its account holders if it so desires.

4. Blackout hits Bangladesh as line from India fails

 i. Bangladesh was hit by a nationwide blackout on Saturday after a transmission line bringing electricity from neighbouring India failed, but power was restored to many parts of the country within a few hours.
ii. Bangladesh began importing electricity from India in October 2013 through a 400-kilovolt transmission line that runs from Baharampur in the Indian state of West Bengal to the town of Bheramara in southwestern Bangladesh.

5. Lieutenant colonel assumes power in Burkina Faso, President flees

 i. The second in command of Burkina Faso's presidential guard, Lieutenant Colonel Isaac Zida, said on Saturday he had taken power after deposed President Blaise Compaore reportedly fled the capital.
ii. The tussle for power comes after an extraordinary week of violent protest against Compaore's 27-year rule that saw parliament stormed and set ablaze.

6. McKinsey study predicts 15 more metros by 2025

i. Rapid urbanisation is expected to create another 15 metropolitan cities over the next decade.
ii. The report titled ‘India’s Economic Geography in 2025: States, Clusters and Cities’.
iii.  The emerging cities include Jamnagar, Dehradun, Cuttak, Bhavnagar, Kolhapur, Vellore, Amaravati, Ajmer, Udaipur, Sangli, Nanded and Mangalore.
iv. The McKinsey report has also classified the states into four-broad groups for future growth potential. Chandigarh, Delhi, Goa and Puducherry have been termed as ‘Very High Performing’ states.
v. Eight states such as Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Kerala, Maharashtra, Punjab, Tamil Nadu and Uttarakhand have been rated as the ‘High Performing’ states, which are likely to account for 52 per cent of India’s incremental GDP growth from 2012 to 2015.
vi. The report estimates that India would be 38 per cent urbanised by 2025, up from 31 per cent in 2011.

7. Union Cabinet approved proposal to amend FDI policy in construction and real estate sector

i. Union Cabinet approved the proposal to amend Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) policy in construction and real estate sectors. 
ii. The proposal is the minimum capital requirement is brought down from 10 million US dollar to 5 million US dollar.
iii. In case of development of serviced plots, the condition of minimum land of 10 hectares has been completely removed.
iv. In case of development of trunk infrastructure, though the lock in period has not reduced from 3-year lock-in period but permitted foreign investors to investors to exit on project completion or 3 years from the date of final investment.

8. BCCI imposes claim worth 250 cr on WICB

 i. The BCCI has slammed a damage claim worth 250 crore on WICB (West Indies Cricket Board) following their team's withdrawal midway through the India tour and threatened to take legal action if the board didn't respond within 15 days.
ii. The BCCI had apparently suffered a loss close to 400 crore due to the cancellation.
