National Affairs


  • Indian Air Force celebrated 82nd Foundation Day (Air Force Day) Today.
  1. The Indian Air Force was officially established on 8th October 8 1932 when it was created as an auxiliary air force of the Indian Empire.
  2. Indian Air Force (IAF) chief Arup Raha said that the government is taking the recent instances of ceasefire violations at the border “seriously” and efforts are being made to resolve the situation.
  3. SachinTendulkar attends the ceremony.
  4. Tendulkar was conferred with the honorary title of Honorary Group Captain four years ago and is the first person with no aviation background to get the honour.
  • Narendra Modi promises to implement river linking project to resolve water problem for Haryana farmers.
  • Giving a push to the Make in India drive, the government cleared 19 defense proposals of various companies including Punj Lloyd and Bharat Forge that had been pending for the last few years. 
  • The Supreme Court today refused to fix any cooling off period for judges to take up government assignments after retirement, an issue which has been widely debated after former CJI P Sathasivam took governorship soon  after his tenure ended. 
  • Hudhud, a strong cyclone, named after a colourful bird, heading towards India’s southeastern coast gathered strength today, uprooting trees, triggering landslides and snapping power and phone links as it crossed the Andaman and Nicobar islands, officials said.
  • The cyclonic storm would cross north Andhra Pradesh and adjoining Odisha coast between Visakhapatnam and Gopalpur by October 12


International Affairs

  • United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has asked India and Pakistan to resolve their issues diplomatically and through dialogue. His reply came amidst escalation of ceasefire violations along the Line of Control.
  • A UN committee that deals with administrative and budgetary issues has approved a USD 49.9 million funding for the world body's large-scale response to tackle the spread of the deadly Ebola virus.


Awards & Honors

  • American scientists Eric Betzig and William Moerner and German scientist Stefan Hell win 2014 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for improving the resolution of microscopes. Check complete story from here.
  • Anoop Jain, a young Indian from Bihar, has won the prestigious Waislitz Global Citizen Award 2014 for his "exemplified values of a Global Citizen" through his work in founding Humanure Power (HP) in Bihar in 2011 that builds community sanitation facilities in rural India. 
  • The award carries a USD 100,000 cash prize in recognition to the winner's work in making the "world a better place."

  • The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has said India has recovered from the economic slowdown.
